Our math tutors are available to meet students at a variety of locations throughout the Columbus, Ohio area. You and your tutor will determine the best place to meet, such as a library or coffee shop. We have worked with students from Dublin, New Albany, Bexley, Upper Arlington, Hilliard, Worthington, Powell, Grandview Heights, Granville, Columbus and beyond. The library branches our tutors use most often are Dublin, Upper Arlington (Tremont Road and Lane Road), Bexley, New Albany, Worthington, and Hilliard.What is a typical math tutoring session like?
Our number one priority is to make sure your child understands the math concepts in such a way that they are able to perform extremely well on school mathematics tests. We make this possible by (1) reviewing and teaching material that your child has struggled with on past assessments, (2) helping your child with ongoing math homework assignments, (3) practicing mathematics comprehension using exercises from your child’s textbook and a variety of online math exercises, and (4) working ahead in the math class syllabus so your child is not overwhelmed when they are taught new material. The “common denominator” (pun intended) of our tutoring is that we listen to what our students need, and we provide them with customized instruction to teach them as efficiently and effectively as possible.Math Courses We Tutor, by Level
Middle School Math and Pre-Algebra
Middle school is where many students first decide they are “bad at math,” usually over fractions, ratios, percents, negative numbers, and the first steps of solving equations. We go back to whichever of those pieces is shaky and rebuild it, because everything in Algebra 1 depends on them. Sessions are short on lecture and long on the student working problems while the tutor watches for the exact step where things go wrong.
Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2
In Algebra 1, the trouble spots are usually linear equations and graphing, systems, exponents, and factoring. Geometry brings proofs, which many students have never been asked to write before, along with similar triangles, circles, and the right-triangle trigonometry that returns on the SAT and ACT. Algebra 2 covers quadratics, polynomial and rational functions, logarithms, and the start of trigonometry, and it is where many students need the most help. In each course we work from the student’s own textbook, notes, and past tests, so what we practice matches what the teacher will ask.
Precalculus, AP Precalculus, and AP Calculus AB/BC
Precalculus and AP Precalculus are mostly about functions and trigonometry: the unit circle, identities, transformations, and the polynomial and rational function behavior that calculus assumes. In AP Calculus AB we cover limits, derivatives, and integrals; BC adds sequences and series, parametric and polar functions, and more integration techniques. Both get regular practice on released AP free-response questions so students learn how the exam awards points. When a calculus student is struggling, the cause is often precalculus or algebra, and we fix that first.
Statistics, AP Statistics, and College Math
AP Statistics is a different kind of math: the hard parts are reading a problem correctly, choosing the right procedure, and writing an answer in context. We spend much of our time on exactly that, along with probability, sampling distributions, confidence intervals, and significance tests. For college students, we tutor college algebra, precalculus, calculus, and introductory statistics, including students home from school for the summer.
Who Teaches Our Math Students
Every BWS tutor has scored in the 95th percentile or better on a national standardized test, has prior teaching experience, has completed more than 30 hours of our training, and has passed a background check. Our math tutors’ backgrounds include:
- Mathematics degree, magna cum laude. Former university peer tutor for Precalculus, Calculus I, and Calculus II; pursuing a teaching license. Specialties: algebra, geometry, calculus, and physics.
- Mechanical engineering background, two master’s degrees. College instructor with a perfect score on the math section of the GRE. Specialties: AP Calculus, AP Statistics, ACT and SAT math, and GRE math.
- Civil engineering degree. Completed a university research fellowship; tutors algebra, geometry, calculus, and statistics along with chemistry and physics.
- Statistics and mathematics backgrounds. Two tutors with university coursework in statistics, mathematics, and finance, specializing in calculus and statistics.
- Classroom experience. A substitute teacher in Columbus City Schools and the Bexley School District, now pursuing licensure to teach high school math. Specialties: algebra, geometry, calculus, and statistics.

Our math tutors have worked with students from Dublin City Schools (Jerome, Coffman, and Scioto), Upper Arlington High School, Bexley High School, New Albany High School, Worthington Kilbourne and Thomas Worthington, Hilliard, Grandview Heights, Columbus Academy, Columbus School for Girls, Wellington, St. Charles, and Bishop Watterson. Families in Powell, Lewis Center, and elsewhere in Delaware County, including Olentangy students, are welcome to meet a tutor at the Dublin or Worthington library, or to work with us online through our Socrates platform.
Why do so many students struggle with math? How can your tutors help?
- Unlike most other subjects in school, Math is very sequential. If a student does not grasp an idea from algebra, it can haunt them throughout their high school career. We determine what building blocks are missing in a student’s math learning and turn those weak areas into strengths.
- Math is more conceptual than knowledge-based. With many subjects, a student can easily prepare for a test by memorizing facts from a review sheet. With math, however, students become stuck as they hit concepts they cannot comprehend on their own. Our math tutors believe there is no such thing as a stupid question. They will help students wrap their minds around challenging math concepts by explaining them in a way that is clear, concise, and compassionate.
- Math can be tough to teach in a group setting. While teachers do the best they can to explain things in a way and at a pace that works for every student, given the different ability levels of students, this can be quite difficult to do. Students are often reluctant to ask questions in a group class for fear of “looking stupid.” In a private math tutoring session, your child will feel comfortable asking about whatever they need, and they can be assured that it will be explained in a way and at a pace that optimizes their learning.
